History

capital-the Castello di Rossino lies on a headland on the slopes of Mount Resegone, overlooking "that branch of Lake Como" made famous in the work of the Italian writer Alessandro Manzoni, and the picturesque medieval hamlet of Rossino, near Calolziocorte in the province of Lecco.
Alessandro Manzoni himself was fascinated by the Castello di Rossino to the point of choosing it as the fictional home of "the Unnamed", one of the characters of his novel, The Betrothed.
This fortified medieval building is said to date back to even before the Thirteenth Century. Rossino was one of the fortresses belonging to the Benaglio family, the lords of Val San Martino who ruled over Rossino. Subsequently taken over by the Rota family, the castle suffered a decline over the years until, at the end of the Eighteenth Century, it was restored as a manor house.
The castle and courts are surrounded by crenellated walls which incorporate a vast rectangular building and a spectacular stone tower dating back to 1200, which lies at the top of the hill, its four floors in a perfect state of conservation. It is a sound construction, with skilfully built corners and Roman arched windows. The tower has a double-pitched roof.
Nowadays all the ancient Seventeenth Century buildings, fully restored, are fit for use and equipped with state-of-the-art technology. Full of charm are also the park and its vineyards, the water streams and the terraces, wisely overlooking the valley and offering a spectacular view of the lake.
